Phoenix-shape painted lacquer spoon

Qin Dynasty (221–207 BC)

Unearthed in 1975 from Shuihudi M9, Yunmeng.

Height: 13.3 cm, length: 14.8 cm, width: 10.6cm

Wooden core, made by carved forming. The bowl of the spoon is hollowed out to form the phoenix’s body, and the handle is carved into its neck and head. Its eyes, nose, ears, feathers are painted in red and brown lacquer; below the phoenix’s tail, there are branded characters such as “Xian Kou”. This spoon represents an unprecedented new type of artifact.
