Painted lacquer phoenix-shaped Shao (ladle)

Western Han Dynasty (206 BC–25 AD)

Unearthed in 1978 from Shuihudi M47, Yunmeng.

Bowl length: 11.7 cm, bowl width: 9 cm, total height: 10 cm, handle length: 4 cm

Wooden core, made by carved forming. Bowl hollowed into the shape of phoenix body, and handle carved into the shape of phoenix head and neck. Eyes, nose, ears and feathers of the phoenix painted in red and brown lacquer. Outer bottom branded with the characters “Zheng Ting”.
