Unerring Precision: the Archer Yang Youji

Description: During the Spring and Autumn period (770-476 BC), Yang Youji, a master archer under King Zhuang of Chu, possessed extraordinary skill and could shoot through a willow leaf a hundred paces away. The artist employs a combination of realism and expressive exaggeration to render the archery posture of Yang Youji, vividly capturing the spirited demeanor of four galloping horses as they survey their surroundings, thus achieving a harmonious unity of form and spirit between rider and horse. Framed by clouds and sea, and embellished with dragon and phoenix, the piece highlights Yang Youji’s heroic prowess and his assured mastery in achieving his aims.
