Ink and color on gold-flecked paper 17.5*53 cm
Zhang Chong (active 17th century), also known by his zi (courtesy name) Ziyu and his hao (literary name) Tunan, was a native of Nanjing. He excelled in figure painting, particularly depictions of elegant women. His brushwork is bold and unrestrained, while his use of color is marked by an archaic refinement. His renderings of flowers and plants are graceful, his landscapes clear and softly luminous. Possessing a profound command of brush and ink, he employed a concise mode of modeling, through which his paintings attain an almost transcendent level of artistic mastery.
