Yuan Yao (dates unknown), also known by his zi (courtesy name) Zhaodao, was a native of Jiangdu (in present-day Yangzhou, Jiangsu province). He was the nephew of the celebrated artist Yuan Jiang, with whom he shared equal renown. He excelled in painting landscapes, figures, flowers and birds, and was particularly skilled in depicting towers, terraces, and pavilions. His representative works include The Epang Palace(Epang gong tu) and Twelve Views of Summer Retreat at Mount Li(Lishan bishu shierjing tu). Distinguished by opulent compositions, richly layered washes, and meticulously rendered figures, his paintings exemplify a sumptuous and refined aesthetic.
