Jiao Bingzhen (active 17th-18th century), A native of Jining, Shandong province. A distinguished court painter during the Kangxi reign (1662-1722), he was adept at Western painting techniques, producing flower paintings of remarkable delicacy and refinement. In his landscapes and figure compositions, as well as in the arrangement of architectural and scenic elements, spatial relationships—from near to far and from large to small—were consistently rendered according to Western pictorial principles. By imperial command of Emperor Kangxi, he produced a set of forty-six paintings illustrating The Pictures of Tilling and Weaving(Gengzhi Tu); at the time, artists of the imperial painting academy largely followed his manner. His other notable works include Spring Morning in the Han Palace(Hangong chunxiao tu).
