Wang Luonian (1870-1925), also known by his zi (courtesy name) Duqi and his hao (literary name) Ouke, was a native of Qiantang (in present-day Hangzhou). He spent much of his life in the Huai River region. He excelled in landscape painting, distinguished by a pure and graceful spirit, and was ranked alongside Shen Tang in reputation. In his later years, he studied the Four Wangs in the early Qing Dynasty, developing a style that is restrained, elegant, and transcendent. His fame spread across the region after Zhang Zhidong, the Governor-General of Huguang (Modern-day Hubei and Hunan provinces), appointed him as an art instructor at the Lianghu Normal School. His representative work is the handscroll Tea Chat in a Cold Hut(Hanlu minghua tu).
