Luo Mu (1622-1705), also known by his zi (courtesy name) Fanniu, was a native of Ningdu, Jiangxi province. He spent much of his life in Nanchang. In his early years, he studied painting under his fellow townsman Wei Shu, and later deepened his practice through close study of the styles of masters such as Huang Gongwang and Dong Qichang. Gradually, he developed a distinctive personal manner and exerted notable influence in the Jianghuai region; his style came to be known as the “Jiangxi School.” He was accomplished in regular script calligraphy, and as a man of diverse talents, he was a poet, a connoisseur of wine, and an expert in tea preparation. His representative works include his painting Sparse Woods and Ravines(Linhe xiaoshu tu).
