Xiang Shengmo (1597-1658) was a native of Jiaxing, Zhejiang province. Originally his zi (courtesy name) was Yi, which he later changed to Kongzhang. He was also known by his hao (literary names) Yi'an and Xushan Qiao. The grandson of the preeminent collector and painter Xiang Yuanbian, he was exposed to masterpieces from a young age. He excelled at figure and flower painting, but was particularly renowned for landscape painting, characterized by an elegant and refined brushwork rich in variation. Especially fond of depicting pine trees, he earned the reputation that “Xiang’ines are renowned throughout the southeastern China.”He was the author of the Collected Works of the Langyuntang Studio(Langyuntang Ji).
