Wu Kuan (1435-1504), also known by his zi (courtesy name) Yuanbo and his hao (literary names) Pao’an and Yuyan Tingzhu, was a native of Changzhou (in present-day Wu County, Jiangsu Province) and a scholar-official who rose to the Minister of Rites. Excelling in running script, he modeled his hand after Su Shi, developing a style characterized by ink-rich brushwork interspersed with rugged strength. His representative works include the calligraphy scrolls Poem on Planting Bamboo(Zhongzhu Shi Juan) and Poem Inscribed on Zhao Mengfu’s “Rivers among Layered Peaks”(Ti Zhao Mengfu Chongjiang Diezhang Tu Shi).
