Gao Cen (1621-1691), also known by his zi (courtesy names) Shanchang and Weisheng, was a native of Hangzhou who resided in Nanjing. A devotee of Tang poetry, he rendered landscapes with precise and refined brushwork, eschewing any hint of coarseness. He was also highly skilled in freehand flower paintings, which were celebrated for their striking elegance. He is acclaimed alongside Gong Xian and others as one of the “Eight Masters of Nanjing.”His representative works include Appraising Antiques in the Shade of a Forest(Linyin Pinggu Tu) and Autumn Moon over the Phoenix Terrace(Fengtai Qiuyue Tu).
