Zhang Zhao (1691-1745), Running Script after Mi Fu, hanging scroll

Zhang Zhao (1691-1745), also known by his zi (courtesy name) Detian and his hao(literary names) Jingnan and Tianping Jushi, was a native of Huating (in present-day Shanghai). He rose to the position of Minister of Justice. a master of the Guange (standard chancery) style, he excelled in Running-Regular script. His monumental transcription of the Record of the Yueyang Pavilion(Yueyang lou ji)—noted for its robust yet elegant brushwork—remains on display in the pavilion today. It is hailed as one of the “Three Perfections”(Sanjue), representing the harmonious union of a historic landmark, a literary masterpiece, and superb calligraphic art. His representative works include the Transcription of the Analects(Lu Lunyu Shu).
