Tang Zhiqi (1579-1651), also known by his zi (courtesy names) Fuwu and Yuansheng (sometimes written as Xuansheng), was a native of Jiangdu (modern-day Hangzhou). He developed a passion for painting at a young age and excelled in landscape painting, with a particular mastery of the fan format. His representative works include his painting Mountain RainImpending (Shanyu Yulai Tu). He is also the author of the theoretical treatise The Subtle Essentials of Painting(Huishi Weiyan).
